What's Diabetic Neuropathy

What's Diabetic Neuropathy

The nervous system, which is outside the brain and surrounds our body like a widespread internet network, can be damaged due to diabetes, cancer, rheumatism, and some drugs used.

Since the deterioration in the muscle nerves starts in the most distant part of the brain, the loss of sensation in the hands and feet can cause movement disorders.

Memorial Hospital Muscle Diseases Department experts gave information about peripheral nerve damage and treatment methods.

Loss of feeling comes in the form of socks and gloves.

A collective disease of peripheral nerves is called polyneuropathy. In polyneuropathies, the deterioration of the nerves generally starts from the farthest end of the brain. For this reason, the feet are usually affected first, and then the hands.

Loss of sensation in the feet and hands, which starts from the very tips, that is, the fingers, and extends upwards, reminding of the form of socks or gloves, and decreased movement in the foot and hand muscles are usually accompanied. This condition can be defined as feeling more or less pain, heat, and touch, tingling, burning, stinging.

Sometimes, the degree of being affected by one of the sensations or movement disorders may be more severe. Since autonomic nerves are mostly found in the internal organs, if they have participated in the disease, they can give appropriate symptoms.

Peripheral (surrounding) nervous system: It is the part of our nervous system that is outside of the brain and consists of “rope” – “wire” structures that surround a large part of our body in the form of a network, almost like a telephone or internet network. According to their functions, peripheral nerves are divided into the motor, sensory and autonomic nerves

Motor (movement) nerves: These are the nerves that transmit this command to the muscles that will perform the movement after the "move" command produced by the movement center in the brain is conveyed to it.

Sensory (sensory) nerves: These are the nerves that transmit the sensations/feelings such as pain, hot-cold, touch roughly received from our skin, joints, internal organs, to the brain and spinal cord centers related to the senses in order to perceive these sensations and create the necessary responses.

Autonomic nerves: These are the nerves that work involuntarily and perform functions such as heartbeat, blood pressure, bowel movements.

May occur due to diabetes or cancer

While spreading throughout the body and wrapping them like a net, these nerves generally make their way through intertwined bundles, divide into branches, and rarely, each kind of nerve follows a separate course. Polyneuropathies can either occur due to a reason encountered during life (acquired) or there is a congenital defect in the structure or functions of our peripheral nerves.

Acquired polyneuropathies can occur for a wide variety of reasons during our lifetime. Diabetes, some infections, rheumatic diseases, cancers, some drugs used are some of these reasons. There are also polyneuropathies that occur when our immune system attacks the nervous system itself for no other reason.

Two of the best-known of these are Guillain Barré syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. Recognizing acquired polyneuropathies is important because most of the time they are treatable. If the underlying cause can be found, treatment of this cause can often also lead to an improvement in polyneuropathy.

Even when treatable, the healing process in polyneuropathies requires patience, because nerve tissue is a slow-healing tissue and recovery usually takes months. In this period, whatever the treatment, physiotherapy exercises should be an integral part of these treatments.

Physiotherapy and surgical methods can be used for treatment.

Inherited polyneuropathies result from a miscoding in one of our genes that we pass on from our parents. In this case, that gene product cannot be made properly and a structural or functional disorder occurs in our peripheral nerves. Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and its subtypes are the best-known diseases of this group.

In hereditary polyneuropathies, although the structural defect is present at birth, the symptoms of the disease may appear sometimes at a very early age, but sometimes during adolescence or adulthood. It can sometimes be very difficult to distinguish inherited polyneuropathies from acquired polyneuropathies, especially in adulthood.

Knowing the presence of other patients in the family in hereditary polyneuropathies is very helpful in diagnosis. There is currently no known drug treatment for these polyneuropathies. However, efforts to find treatment continue all over the world.

Numbness and tingling in the brain can cause anxiety and panic. The reason for this is that it brings to mind-brain hemorrhage disease.

However, the cause of every numbness or tingling in the brain does not indicate dangerous diseases such as cerebral hemorrhage. The reason for the numbness and tingling sensation may be due to nervous and psychological factors.

In this article, what causes a tingling sensation in the brain, how is it treated? We will answer your questions in detail.

People who work under intense work tempo may experience numbness and tingling in the brain as a result of intense emotions such as excessive stress, anxiety, and tension. Psychological factors can cause nerve reactions in the body.

The tingling sensation felt in the brain may not always occur due to psychological or cerebral hemorrhage factors. The spasm that may occur in the muscles in the posterior lobe of the brain can cause tingling and numbness. These types of situations can have dangerous consequences if they occur frequently.

The worst cause of tingling and numbness felt in the brain can be a cerebral hemorrhage.

People who have had a brain hemorrhage may also have difficulty speaking, walking, and standing. As soon as such problems are seen, a health institution should be visited immediately.

Scalp Numbness The tingling may be associated with the scalp. There are two brain nerves at the back of the head. Those nerves provide the sensation in the scalp, called the occipital. It spreads to the scalp from the protruding part at the end of the head.

It collects all the actions we do on the scalp, such as touching, scratching, plucking hair, and transmits them to the brain. This nerve passes together at the back of the head, where the neck muscles pass and touch this nerve if there are strains such as spasms in the muscles. In this case, tingling and numbness may occur in the scalp.

Some people may even think that they have a brain hemorrhage disease when this feeling occurs.

Multiple Sclerosis This autoimmune neurological disorder, which manifests itself with symptoms such as head numbness, blurred vision, and dizziness, occurs as a result of a problem or damage to the myelin sheaths that cover some nerve fibers from the brain and spinal cord, which affect both.

This discomfort, which may show symptoms such as tingling sensation and numbness, is defined as a nervous system disorder that is often accompanied by severe pain in the nerves.

Meningitis This health problem, which is indicated as fever, nausea, and numbness with tingling in the head, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria, affects and disrupts the meninges of the brain.

Trigeminal Nevralaji It is an intense nervous disorder with symptoms such as numbness and tingling in the head. It affects the trigeminal nerves.

Ischemic Heart Attack It is a less serious condition when compared to a stroke. If there is no blood supply to the brain for a short time, a heart attack occurs, which can lead to head numbness.

Spinal Cord Disorders Degenerative disc diseases, spinal infections, herniated discs, or any injury to the spinal cord can cause head numbness.

How Is Tingling In The Brain Treated?

Treatment of Nervous or Psychological Factors:  In order to get rid of the numbness in the head caused by such situations, you should stay away from stress.

Muscle Spasm Treatment:  The most effective method that can help in this regard is the application of hot water. In addition, the use of viscose and soft mattresses, increasing the use of calcium or potassium, and water intake can be in the body.

Brain Bleeding: In this case, the only treatment method would be to go to the doctor. You should go to the nearest health institution immediately and get treatment.

Treatment of Numbness Caused by the Scalp: To get rid of this numbness, you should compress the shoulder and nape with hot water.

Multiple Sclerosis Disorder: Attack treatment is applied for the treatment of this disease. Treatment varies according to the type of attack. However, cortisone therapy can also be applied to patients. Although cortisone treatment is not preferred as it is harmful as well as beneficial, people whose disease progresses very quickly have to see this treatment.

What Causes a Burning, Tingling Feeling in the Body?

A burning sensation in the body is a feeling that occurs as a result of the destruction or injury of the sensory nerves that spread throughout the body.

A burning sensation in the body is a feeling that occurs as a result of the destruction or injury of the sensory nerves that spread throughout the body.

The most important symptom that distinguishes the burning sensation in any part of the body from other sensations is the perception of burning that the person suffers. For example, the perception of a sensation such as a flame or a pepper burn can be defined as a burning sensation.

A burning sensation may occur along with pain in the body, or it may occur as a burning sensation alone. Since there is a nervous system in every part of the body, burning sensations can be seen in different parts of the body depending on the underlying cause.

One of the most important factors that cause damage to the nerves is diabetes.

In diabetic patients, nerve damage occurs as a result of the vessels not feeding the nerves sufficiently, and symptoms such as burning sensation, tingling sensation, numbness, felting sensation, feeling the pain more intensely as if a factor that will cause very little pain is causing too much pain may occur.

Other factors that cause a burning sensation in the body include vitamin B 12 deficiencies, alcohol use, smoking, nerve damage due to previous traumas, accidents, and nerve compression.

What causes a burning sensation in the legs?

Among the factors that may cause a burning sensation in the legs, it can be caused by the injuries and compression of the nerves in the nervous system, and most of them are rheumatic diseases.

Factors such as herniated disc in the legs, compression of the sciatic nerve, rheumatic diseases, diabetes, facial pain syndrome caused by muscles and tendons, advanced varicose veins can cause a burning sensation, tingling, numbness, and pain in the legs.

Burning sensation in the legs may occur due to the pressure of some nerves passing through the groin, due to being overweight or wearing a belt.

If there is an inflammatory condition due to rheumatism, sensations such as burning, numbness, tingling, and pain may occur in the legs.

In acute or chronic arterial occlusions, there may be a burning sensation, tingling, numbness, and pain in the legs.
