How Many Carbs For Diabetics Per Meal

How many carbohydrates per day can you actually eat if you have type 2 diabetes?

And what about if you want to lose weight or follow a low-carbohydrate diet like a man or woman?

I will give you detailed answers to all these questions (and more). At the end of this article, you will know everything you need to know about how many carbohydrates you can eat per day.

How many carbohydrates per day can you with type 2 diabetes?

There are many misconceptions about carbohydrates. Also about following a diet with little or no carbohydrates.

Many people think that a 'low-carb diet' is healthy. And that you eat as few carbohydrates as possible in type 2 diabetes to lower your blood sugar.

The reality is that it is not all so black and white.

To answer the question of how many carbohydrates per day you can eat, you and I have to go in-depth together. Only then is it possible to answer how many carbohydrates you can eat?

The purpose of this article is therefore to answer the question "how many carbohydrates per day can you eat (for type 2 diabetes or to lose weight)" as best as possible. You will find that there are many snags in asking this question.

How many carbs per day on a low-carb

 Diet for diabetes?

If you look on the largest scientific publications website, you can find almost 10,000 publications about a low-carbohydrate diet.

It gets even crazier when you look at the studies themselves.

You soon find out that there is no consensus when something is a low-carb diet and when it isn't. One study finds that something is low in carbohydrates if you get 30% of your calories from carbohydrates...

...and the other research if you get 5% of your calories from carbohydrates.

This makes it impossible to give an unambiguous answer when something is too much or too little.

It's like asking the question  "what's the best dish in the world?"  or  "what is the most beautiful house in the world?".

If you don't clearly define what is 'tasty' or 'beautiful', it is impossible to answer.

How many carbohydrates per day is too much or too little?

The same actually applies to how many grams of carbohydrates per day you can eat with a low-carbohydrate diet or with diabetes. It is never agreed what is much or little.

But there's one thing pretty much all good research agrees on:

The quality of the carbohydrates you eat is much more important than the amounts.

Below I will explain why.

The quality is much more important than the quantity

When you decide to eat fewer carbohydrates, you often do it because you have a certain goal.

Think about:

Lower blood sugar

To lose weight

You make the assumption that the amount of carbohydrates you eat causes your blood sugar to be high or that you are overweight. So you're going to cut out the products that contain a lot of carbohydrates from your life.

As:

  • Soft drink
  • Cookies
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Sweets

And much more

By no longer eating these products, you indeed eat a lot fewer carbohydrates...

...but you also do something much more important :

You increase the quality of your diet by avoiding these products.

Because as a replacement for this, you will eat products that are much healthier. Products that all contain fewer carbohydrates but also - and this is much more important - more fiber. Think vegetables, nuts, and fruit.

Not 'how much you eat but 'what' you eat

The studies also agree that WHAT you eat is especially important.

amount of carbohydrates per day from vegetables

As long as you eat healthy products, the amount of carbohydrates you eat makes little difference. For example, research shows that you can easily reverse type 2 diabetes with a vegan diet.

This is a diet where you only eat plants. Such a diet automatically contains a lot of carbohydrates... but also a lot of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

And those are things that processed products with a lot of carbohydrates  (such as cookies and candies) DO NOT contain.

If you have diabetes or want to lose weight, don't ask yourself how many carbs you can have per day... but ask yourself WHAT carbs you should eat each day.

"But how many carbohydrates per day can I eat now if the quality is good?"

I can understand very well that you need a guideline regarding the number of carbohydrates per day.

Instead of "do what you want as long as the quality is good" I will give you some more concrete advice:

In our  Diabetes Reversal Method course, I find that most people are fine with about  20 to 30 percent carbohydrates.

Exactly how much this is in grams depends on your calorie needs. And it is influenced by several things.

Think of age, gender, height, and the degree of movement.

But I practice it comes down to about 75 to 100 grams of carbohydrates per day. That's a normal (and my recommended) amount of carbohydrates per day for a diabetic and non-diabetic. Not too high and not too low. This amount is also good if you do fitness (or another sport, for example).

Do you prefer to eat fewer carbohydrates and/or do you just like high-fat food and do not need so many carbohydrates in your diet? Then I would advise you to eat 50 grams per day. If you go even lower, you make it unnecessarily difficult and heavy on yourself.

So if you really want to stick to a certain number of carbohydrates per day, then I would start from this. This applies to both someone who wants to lose weight and someone who has type 2 diabetes and wants to improve their blood sugar.

But don't forget!

The quality of your carbohydrates is much more important than the amount.

The best way to calculate or track how many carbs are in your diet per day is to use an app. Personally, I would recommend MyFitnesspal. In this article, you can read why I recommend this app.

The best way not to worry about carbs

That was all you needed to know about how many carbs per day you can eat.

As you can read, the quality of carbohydrates is many times more important than the amount. Especially if you have type 2 diabetes.

The quality of the carbohydrates can even cure your diabetes.

It has recently been discovered that it is possible to reverse type 2 diabetes.
